Loose Teeth – Glasgow

A tooth that has started to move can feel unsettling, and you are not alone. Gum disease is one of the main reasons adults across Scotland lose teeth, although it is largely preventable when spotted early. We help people understand why a tooth feels loose and what can happen next.

Why adult teeth start to move

The most common causes of loose teeth in adults are gum disease, a knock or injury, and pressure from grinding or an uneven bite. With gum disease, plaque builds up along the gumline, the gums can pull away from the teeth, and the bone that supports each tooth can gradually be lost. You might notice tender or bleeding gums, or new gaps opening between front teeth that were not there before.

A loose tooth can make eating feel uncomfortable, so it is a sign worth acting on. Since early gum disease is often painless, a wobbly tooth can sometimes be the first clear signal that something needs attention. Wobbly teeth in adults should always be assessed by a dentist, but the outlook can be good when the underlying cause is identified and treated early.

The table below shows some common reasons a tooth feels loose and a sensible first step for each.

Why a tooth feels loose What it often points to A sensible first step
Gum disease Plaque has affected the gum and bone that support the tooth Ask your dentist for a check and professional clean
A knock or injury The tooth or its socket has been damaged Seek urgent dental advice if an adult tooth is knocked out
Grinding or an uneven bite Repeated pressure may have loosened the tooth over time Have your bite assessed so the cause can be managed
Just after a deep clean Teeth can feel wobbly briefly, then settle as gums heal Mention it at review; usually eases within weeks

What to do if a tooth feels loose or is knocked out

Try not to wiggle the loose tooth, and keep the area clean with gentle brushing. If you are in discomfort, over-the-counter pain relief taken as directed on the packet can help.

Should an adult tooth be knocked out completely, time really matters. Hold the tooth down by the crown rather than the root. If you can, gently place it back into the socket. If that is not possible, keep it in milk while you seek urgent dental care. When your own practice is closed, phone NHS 24 on 111 for urgent dental care.

How your dental practice treats loose teeth

Loose teeth treatment starts with finding the cause, because the right approach depends on what is making the tooth move. When gum disease is the cause, a professional deep clean, such as scaling and root planing, can remove hardened plaque and bacteria from below the gumline. This helps reduce inflammation and gives the gums a chance to recover. As the gums settle, a slightly loose tooth can begin to feel steadier again.

Your dentist will talk you through a treatment plan that suits your mouth. Booking early with a loose teeth dentist gives the best chance of keeping your natural teeth.

Some people search for a loose teeth specialist when a tooth starts to move. What matters most is prompt, careful dental treatment from an experienced team.

We invest in the latest technology, including on-site 3D imaging, so planning stays precise and the quality stays high. We handle everything under one roof, from scans to on-site impressions and our laboratory. You are in safe hands with a friendly team from your first initial consultation onwards. That joined-up patient care keeps things comfortable while your questions are answered by the people doing the work.

Cosmetic dentistry options for a loose tooth

Sometimes a tooth is too damaged to keep, and your dentist may recommend extractions as the kinder or safer choice. A gap does not have to be permanent. Modern options can restore both the appearance and the feel of natural teeth, with comfort and quality built to last.

Depending on your case, the options include:

  • For many people, dental implants are a comfortable, fixed way to replace one or more teeth. Every case is different, so dental implant treatment is planned around your health, your bone, and your goals.
  • The same fixed approach applies when replacing missing teeth, whether you have lost one or several. Implants are an effective way to replace teeth that cannot be saved. The aim is a new smile that looks natural and feels comfortable, giving you the confidence to eat and speak with ease.
  • A chipped tooth is sometimes rebuilt with composite bonding, a cosmetic dentistry technique, though a truly loose tooth needs its cause treated first.
  • Where an uneven bite plays a part, orthodontic treatment can sometimes help, assessed case by case.

Erskine Dental Care is a private implant clinic, and private patients are never rushed into a decision.

Dental care for your gums and oral health

Good daily habits protect your teeth more than people expect, and they are quick to build. Brushing twice a day, cleaning between your teeth, and keeping up regular check-ups all help your gums stay healthy.

If you smoke or manage diabetes, your dentist may suggest more frequent hygiene appointments to monitor your gum health and catch changes sooner. Extended opening hours can also make visits more convenient for people travelling in from across the west of Scotland.

Looking after your oral health today is one of the simplest ways to keep a confident smile.

Frequently Asked Questions
Here are answers to a few more questions people often ask us about loose teeth.

It depends on why the tooth is loose. When gum disease is treated early, the gums can firm up, and a slightly wobbly tooth often feels steadier. It will not simply reattach on its own, so getting it assessed is important.

A tooth loosened by injury needs an examination to check the tooth, root and surrounding bone before its long-term outlook can be understood.  The sooner it is looked at, the better the chances of identifying the right treatment.

Often yes, particularly when the cause is identified and treated early. Where gum disease is responsible, professional cleaning and appropriate gum treatment can reduce the inflammation and help stabilise the tooth.

In some cases, the tooth may also be splinted by gently bonding it to the steadier neighbouring teeth while the surrounding tissues heal. The sooner it is looked at, the better the outlook tends to be.

They can be. Gum disease is more likely to progress in people who smoke or live with diabetes. A loosening tooth can be a prompt to look at your wider health too. Healthy gums are good for your whole mouth, and your dentist can guide you to the right help. It is one more reason to book a check-up rather than waiting.
