What are dental implants?

Unlike conventional dentures, which rest on the gum surface, implants support the jawbone from within. This matters because missing teeth can lead to gradual bone loss over time, which may affect facial structure and oral function.
Most adults in good general health with healthy gums and sufficient jawbone may be suitable candidates for implant treatment. Certain conditions, such as gum disease or uncontrolled diabetes, may need to be addressed first, but they don’t automatically rule out implant surgery.

Implant treatment is a minor surgery carried out under local anaesthetic or sedation, so most people report far less discomfort than they anticipated. Depending on your situation, the process may take place in one or two stages.
A single-stage approach places the implant and an interim restoration in the same visit. A two-stage surgery separates placement from the final crown fitting, allowing time for osseointegration, the point at which the bone grows around the implant to create a stable foundation.
The healing time varies between patients, but sticking to soft foods while the area heals is usually recommended, such as:

- Mashed vegetables
- Yoghurt
- Fish
- Pasta Dishes
- Chicken and other meats
As with any procedure, there are side effects to consider, including swelling, brusing or delayed healing. These are common and settle on their own. Your implant dentist will explain them clearly during your appointment so you can make an informed decision.
