What is full mouth reconstruction?
Full dental reconstruction, sometimes called full mouth dental reconstruction, is a treatment plan that restores or replaces most of your teeth in your upper jaw, lower jaw or both. It may combine cosmetic and restorative dental procedures, which can include dental implants, crowns, bridges, veneers and dentures. Rather than treating one tooth at a time, this approach looks at your entire mouth, including your bite, gums and jaw, to address multiple dental problems together.
Combining implants with your natural teeth
You may not need every tooth replaced. If some of your teeth are healthy or can be restored, we keep them and rebuild the rest. This often means placing dental implants where teeth are missing, then adding crowns, bridges, or veneers to the ones worth saving. Full mouth reconstruction can draw on several dental treatments, combined into one treatment plan based on what your mouth needs.
Dental implants
Dental implants are usually titanium posts placed into the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. Once the implant has healed and integrated with the bones, it can support a new crown, bridge, or denture. According to NHS Tayside, impressions are typically taken after healing so the final restoration can be fitted, a process that typically takes two to three months. Healing times can, however, vary between patients.
Crowns, bridges and veneers
Crowns, bridges and veneers restore worn or damaged teeth, fitted onto natural teeth or implants. These restorations rebuild the shape and strength of affected teeth, helping restore the shape, strength and appearance of your teeth while supporting normal biting function.
Dentures
Dentures can be traditional, resting on the gums, or implant-supported, fixed onto implants for extra stability and a more secure alternative to loose dentures.
Healthy gums are essential for successful dental implant placement. If gum disease is present, we treat this first, sometimes alongside tooth extraction, to give any implants the best possible foundation before restorative work begins.
